Matters of the Heart

Oh my have the last few days or even weeks maybe even months been a challenge. We are in a "crashing period" with the twins. I'll explain.

I was told by my mother long ago that children often ebb and flow in six month spurts between falling in line, being compliant and displaying obedience with joy. Then six months of pushing the limits, walking the fine line and teetering on the edge.

At the time she shared this with me I giggled. My first son was small, not old enough yet to exhibit such extremes. I was naive to the wonderful bliss and sweaty work of training and growing up boys into men (and 1 sweet girl).

Now, almost 6 years later, this ebb and flow is clear to me. They are like crashing waves and shifting tides.

Their ability to live at full blast each day brings challenges and joy. During the "crashing waves" period of time I find myself cycling through reminders, instructions, warnings, discipline, and a breath of air. I say, "when you are done with something put it back", "we don't leave Popsicle sticks on the carpet, you know where the trash is", "don't each boogers find a Kleenex", "please flush", "no need to scream in the house, you can play outside", "remember the baby is sleeping, don't slam the toilet lid down", "we are taking a nap today, just like yesterday", "please don't whine it doesn't change anything", "no we can't wear the same clothes for four days", "sorry your socks feel funny", "I don't know where your shoes are I didn't wear them last", "please get off the floor, just talk to me", "don't scream, don't scream, don't scream please!!!". I really could go on and on.

They seem to fight with each other more, struggle sharing, speaking kindly, finding compromise, and hearing any answer except what they want to hear.  Their hearts are raw, their flesh loud, and in turn our lives seem crazy.

It is during this "crashing period" I must dive deep and keep my eye upon the training of their hearts.  Reflecting grace, forgiveness, patience, love, all while setting a firm line and acting quickly to disrespect so as to not leave even a glimpse of opportunity for the devil set a foothold to their hearts.

I'm flawed in this process. I yell sometimes. I cry sometimes. Frustration runs deep and in the quiet of the evening exhaustion comes quick.  Emotionally and physically I am drained. Spiritually it is a battleground.  I must remember to tap into the All Powerful love of Jesus.  I must remain steadfast in His will and love, it is what matters. I attempt to show my children His grace in my life. Ask for forgiveness of them in my shortcomings. Remember to put off self and put on love even when I am weak.  I want to do better. I pray to grow with each cycle.  It always comes on so quickly and leaves just as quickly before I can barely get my footing at times.

Then something happens and the tide shifts and my boys, although still loud, crazy and living at full throttle, are sweeter, softer, more compliant, less whiny, "yes mom", "okay mom", "mom, I want to be a soldier for God", "are you proud of me mom?", "I shared mom, see?".  Their hearts are quieter and they are in a state of "new" composure.

It is in this "quiet cycle" I see glimpses of the hard work paying off. Their hearts are soaking up the lessons, putting on Jesus, and their spirits thirst for Him, being made in His nature, even when the "crashing cycle" seems so much louder.  God is calling them.  He is molding them. Even through my flawed and failed delivery at times.  He is bigger than me.

Thank God!!!

I remember it is their heart that matters most. Not following all the rules, although that is nice and in most cases safer. The rules and expectations are in place for my own sanity as much as for their training.  But, we cannot miss the heart. We must focus on the lessons of the heart...will they thirst for Christ?  Do I even give God a chance to teach and call to them through my flawed life by talking about Him, walking with Him, and exhibiting Grace b/c of Him?

I am the lighthouse to this crazy, wild, crashing, sometimes calm, ocean.  Even as the tides change the need for the lighthouse remains.  It is not just a wild ocean that has need of a lighthouse but the ocean no matter its state.  There are rocks ahead.  There is danger.  God has placed these children into my care, as the lighthouse, to bring them Home.  He is the light.

What an awesome picture.

Lord, help me to be the mother you have called me to be to these precious children.  That during both the crashing and quiet cycles I can reflect your light to their lives. That grace, forgiveness, love, and faithfulness would abide in our home.  That the lighthouse you have created me to be would bring them safety and a place to call home.  Help our home to be a compass that guides them to you.
Help me to be a good mother to boys. Help me to train up a lady in Brynn.  Father....help.

Amen.

Excerpt from M.O.B. Society:

So one day we discard the house rules that have been taped to my wall for awhile~ rip them up and throw them in the trash. He thinks it’s funny, and I explain to him that I’ve been focused on all the wrong things. Instead of house rules, we are now going to have heart rules.
1. Love one another
2. Honor one another
3. Serve one another
4. Cherish one another
5. Encourage one another
I know these words are big, I know these words are bold.  But I also know that he can handle it, the tall order to start the baby steps towards becoming a man.
Another sigh, some tears follow. I don’t want to let go but know I have to~ because these heart rules are the most important kind. The ones that will teach him to treat others the same way Jesus would.
We look up the big words, and he tries to come up with examples of how he did with the new rules that day.  All while bouncing on the bed, making farting noises, and alternating between talking in a fake language and screaming at the top of his lungs.
I smile, and tuck him in.
Because one day he’ll be a man. And one day he’ll be grown. And one day he’ll be gone.
I pray these heart rules can teach him how to shine God and glory and Love and Truth.  Because THAT is all that matters.

Integrity

Someone who stands up for what is right no matter who they are with.

Thought: We can’t give our sons something we don’t have. Look back over the last week or month of your life. One of the BEST things we can do for our sons is admit when we’ve sinned and ask them to forgive us for it. Show your sons the power of humility and use every opportunity, even your failures, to teach them to walk in the truth. What a wonderful God we serve, Who allows even our sin to draw our sons closer to Him!

“He who is steadfast in righteousness will attain to life…” Proverbs 11:19

*My my child walk before You, as David his father walked, with integrity of heart and uprightness, doing according to all that God has commanded him, and keeping His statues and His rules (1 Kings 9:4).

* Till he dies, may my child never put away his integrity (Job 27:5).

* May my child ponder the way that is blameless and walk with integrity of heart within God's house (Psalm 101:2).

* May my child show himself  in all respects to be a model of good works, and in his teaching show integrity, dignity (Titus 2:7).

Integrity Defined

1. Firm adherance to a code of especially moral or artistic values. (incorruptability)

2. Unimpaired Condition. (soundness)

3. The quality or state of being of being complete or undivided.

The man of integrity is one who makes it his constant rule to follow the road of duty, according as truth and the voice of his conscience point it out to him. He is not guided merely by affections which may some time give the color of virtue to a loose and unstable character.
The upright man is guided by a fixed principle, which destines him to do nothing but what is honorable, and to abhor whatever is base or unworthy, hence we find him ever the same, - at all times the trusty friend, the affectionate relative, the conscientious man of business, the pious worker, the public-spirited citizen.
He assumes no borrowed appearance. He seeks no mask to cover him, for he acts no studied part; but he is indeed what he appears to be, - full of truth, candor, and humanity. In all his pursuits, he knows no path but the fair, open, and direct one, and would much rather fail of success than attain if by reproachable means. He never shows us a smiling countenance while he meditates evil against us in his heart. We shall never find one part of his character at variance with another. ~David Dennnger

Prayer:  “Lord God, maker of men of integrity, let me find men of integrity that I may walk with, grow with, and extend the Kingdom of Your Son with in my work place.”

21 Days of Prayer-Day One

Obedience

As we pray for our sons to have obedient hearts today, let’s examine our own, and ask our Savior to help us live out His great love for us so that our sons will see how truly valuable it is.
Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.” ~John 14:21

Lord, please soften my son's heart and place the desire within him to obey his parents in the Lord, for this is right. Help him to honor his father and mother, that it may go well with him and that he might live long in the land. And help me to embrace a lifestyle of obedience, so that my life might be an example to him.  Give me a new vision for teaching and training my son in obedience. Amen

Today's Obedience Prayers:
For more of the Obedience Prayers please purchase the Warrior Prayers ebook here.

*Whether it is favorable or unfavorable, may my child (by name) obey the Lord our God...so that it will go well with him (Jeremiah 42:6).

*May my child obey his parents in the Lord, for this is right (Ephesians 6:1).

*May my child obey his leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over his soul, as those who will have to give an account. Let my child do this with joy and not with groaning (Hebrews 13:17).

*My my child return to the Lord His God, and obey with all his heart and all his soul and all the commands God has given (Deuteronomy 30:2).

The teaching of obedience provides one of the most glorious opportunities to prove the Gospel message to our sons.  If our boys never learn the importance of obeying and the inability to obey by themselves, how will they ever recognize their need for a Savior?

Ephesians 6 provides great encouragement as to the necessity of Obedience.

Brooke provides a great quote:
"If your man cannot submit to Jesus, he cannot lead you. A man must be willing to be led before he can truly lead." (Tommy Nelson, Love and Romance Conference)

I'm excited, although the path is sometimes rough and Satan seeks to destroy, to hold fast to prayer over my boys and teach them obedience God's way.

Here are some neat questions to ponder while thinking about Obedience God's way.

Bible Study Questions

See the article on Ephesians 6:1-4 for answers.
    1. Who are children told to obey?

    2. What does obey mean?

    3. How should a child respond to his parents command if he doesn’t feel like obeying his parents?

    4. What makes a child’s obedience so important - “this is right?”

    5. How does ‘honor’ different from ‘obey’?

    6. How old should a person obey and honor his parents? What principles apply here?

    7. What is the promise that is associated with the command here (Ephesians 6:2-3)?

    8. How does obedience relate to having a good life and living long?

    9. What are the three things fathers are told to do in Ephesians 6:4?

    10. What does it mean not to ‘provoke your children to anger?’ How does it happen. Share an incident from your life if possible you provoked or were provoked.

    11. Why might he address the fathers here in Ephesians 6:4 and not the mothers?

    12. What does the word ‘discipline’ mean in Ephesians 6:4? Why does the world reject this aspect of discipline when training?

    13. What kind of instruction is mentioned here? How can parents implement this? Again, share from your experiences.
Go here for discussion concerning these questions!

Motherhood-what IS my life

Today I read the most wonderful entry from The MOB Society. MOB stands for Mothers of Boys and they offer a perspective to mothering that is specific to the world of boys. They are unique creatures with special callings in life. Raising them to be men is a high calling for a mother and a family. I appreciate their time and encouragement when it comes to raising boys to love Jesus.

Today one of their contributing writers put into words what I often feel. She first quotes Sally Clarkson’s The Mission of Motherhood: Touching Your Child’s Heart for Eternity:

“As it is, after eighteen years of learning the truth of living sacrificially, I have found that embracing God’s call to motherhood once and for all has brought me great peace. Instead of seeing fusses and messes as irritations in my day, for instance, I am more likely to see them as opportunities to train my children to be peacemakers and to learn to be responsible for their own messes. Instead of resenting the interruptions in my schedule, I am more likely to accept them as divine appointments. More and more, I have learned to see my children through the eyes of God and to accept the stages of growth through which he has designed them to grow.”

She writes:

How can my children be an interruption to my life when they ARE my life?
The fresh love and perspective He is bringing through Sally’s words is truly changing our everyday life. I find myself wanting to linger reading just one more book before naps or bedtime. A simple day can become so special when I work with the boys on a new game or craft or Bible verse.

“There’s always something that can replace time with your kids, but you’ll never regret time with your kids.”

I love this reminder.  In a house full of boys and one wild and crazy boy-like girl I often fall victim to forgetting they ARE my life and each moment is a teachable opportunity.  To take a little longer to linger with them, exchange touch with them, express love to them, and when the going gets tough see it as a chance to ignite their hearts.  They are clay and God has placed me to be the molder for Him.

Prayers for a joyful heart

Joy is different than happiness.

"We don't care what *Seth* does when he grows up, " she said, "we just  want him to be happy."  And I cringed as she said it, this Christian  woman I've known all my life.  Because deep down inside I believe that  there's more than happiness in life to aspire to.  Sure, I wish  happiness for my sons.  But if I had to choose between them being happy  for a season & living in sin, or being miserable for a season &  loving Jesus with all their hearts...well, I'd choose the latter.

Happiness is not necessarily holiness.

Men who cheat on their wives, neglect their children and look at porn  each night before bed can be perfectly happy with their lifestyle.  No,  happiness is fleeting.  But joy comes from a right relationship with  Christ.  This week let's pray for the joy of the Lord to root itself  deeply into our precious sons' hearts.  And while we're at it, let's ask  the Lord to make us relish the joy of our salvation as well.

Monday:  May the joy of the Lord be our sons' strength (Nehemiah 8:10)

Tuesday:  May our sons be filled with love, joy, peace,  patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control  (Galatians 5:22)

Wednesday:  May our sons go out in joy and be led forth in peace (Isaiah 55:12)

Thursday:  May the God of hope fill our sons with all joy and  peace as they trust in him, so that they may overflow with hope by                       the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 15:13)

Friday:   May our sons go to the altar of God, to God, their joy and their delight (Psalm 43:4)

Saturday: May our sons count it all joy when they meet trials  of various kinds, as the testing of their faith produces steadfastness.  May they let steadfastness have its full effect, that they may be  perfect and complete, lacking in nothing (James 1:1-4)

Sunday:  May our sons know that while weeping may tarry for the night, joy comes with the morning (Psalm 30:5)
